Hailing from Adelaide South Australia, Tara Coates and Sub Rosa combine a love of indie rock with their captivating front woman’s folk roots to create a dynamic, dark and often intense sound. Think of the engaging and poetic lyrics of old school songwriters such as Lucinda Williams meeting the fervent rock and roll intensity of The Pixies, then add some tasty synth for a modern twist and you’ve got Tara Coates and Sub Rosa.

The last three years have been formative for Tara. In rapid succession she experienced the grief of losing her father, the happiness of getting married and then the life changing craziness of becoming a parent herself. Through it all she emerged a more focused songwriter. After the birth of her son in 2019, she began to write in grabs of time where she could and the music flowed freely. As did a new and cathartic vocal delivery that has found it’s place with an exciting band.

Tara has supported Mia Dyson, Shane Nicholson and Sarah McLeod of The Superjesus amongst others. Her 2016 release ‘Wicked World' reached number two on AMRAP’s national charts, received radio airplay throughout Australia and earned her a nomination for ‘Best Female’ in the South Australian Music Awards.

An active music educator, Tara has run workshops for the Guitar Festival, the Adelaide City Council and the SA Women's Prison. Passionate about singing and telling the stories of women, Tara is a member of the collaborative Women in Song project and recently performed solo at Adelaide's International Women’s Day March.

Tara Coates and Sub Rosa are currently working on new music to be released later this year
